Dave King and his backroom team lead a new look Gornal Athletic into a fresh WMRL season and will be pleased to reach the end of August unbeaten.

Our opening day fixture against Dudley Sports was played in horrendous weather conditions as rain lashed down throughout the entire 90 minutes which contributed to the fact that virtually nothing happened for the first hour. Dudley took the lead with a floated ball that deceived Joe Sidaway in goal but Sam Lester and Luke Carter netted in stoppage time to bank a hard earned win and a valuable three points.

The only away game in August was a trip to newly promoted Pelsall Villa Colts. The hosts took the lead in the second half but again the Peacocks worked hard to put themselves ahead with goals from Josh Godwin and Nathan Jones. Unfortunately Pelsall Pegged us back to 2-2 and the sides shared the points but it was by no means a bad result again a very good side.

Bromyard Town were the visitors to Garden Walk for game three of the season and it would be a convincing win with a much more sustained period of cohesion than had been shown in the opening two games. Nathan Guest added to two Luke Carter penalties in the first half to give an already comfortable 3-1 lead at the break. We then fully controlled the second half with Sam Lester adding a fourth before Matthew Hogg made amends for an earlier penalty miss with our fifth.

Finally, we hosted Stourport Swifts Development to close out the first month of fixtures. The visitors took the lead but again we showed resilience to pull ourselves level as Luke Carter headed home his fourth goal from the opening four games. The lads got stronger after the goal and applied pressure to the Stourport goal but the visitors didn’t buckle and we we left to rue missed chances and settle for a draw.

We end August unbeaten and in third in the standings and with the feeling that we’re still yet to see this side at their best it’s not a bad start at all. September begins at home as Pelsall Villa Colts come to town on the 2nd for what will be a highly competitive fixture.
